Callaway Paradym and Paradym X Irons Review

Callaway Paradym and Paradym X irons use a Forged 455 Steel Face, normally found in woods, and a Speed Frame to combine distance and feel.

The Paradym and Paradym X irons are considerably sleeker than last year’s Rogue irons, which were excellent performers in our best golf irons test. The new models use the same 455 stainless steel normally found in metalwoods, but thanks to their A.I. tech, Callaway have managed to bring the material to irons and create the brand’s most powerful forged iron face ever.

A.I. has helped to optimize each iron’s face uniquely for more speed, higher launch, and increased spin consistency.

Using the high-strength Forged 455 Face Cup means the R&D team had to reinvent the irons’ heads, and the all-new hollow body design uses a Speed Frame (like Jailbreak but for irons) to add stiffness and support and enables fast ball speeds across the face and consistent spin levels.

Each body has three differing-sized ‘frames’, and each iron loft across the two models has had its own frame formation created (meaning more than two-dozen Speed Frame iterations) to ensure the best possible performance from each club.

New dual Tungsten weighting, used internally and externally, has allowed Callaway to precisely locate each iron’s center of gravity for easy launch and consistent speeds.

Unique to Callaway, ‘Urethane Microspheres’ – effectively a sponge-like material that works like loft insulation – have been used in the irons to help create a super-soft feel and incredible sound without impacting ball speeds.

Aimed at golfers who are looking for a players’ distance iron with a refined shape and premium forging, Paradym suits players from around a four-handicap up to 12 and uses less powerful lofts than the X, slotting it nicely into the best players’ distance irons category.

It has a players’ iron look in a forgiving package and Callaway say it is for slightly better players than their Apex iron.

A pre-worn leading edge is designed to get through the ground more efficiently and boost forgiveness, while up to 67g of Tungsten has been placed both internally and externally to position each club’s center of gravity more precisely than ever before. This will help make the irons easy to launch and boost speeds on off-center hits, which the brand say will prove the difference between hitting targets and coming up short.

Paradym X is Callaway’s most powerful and forgiving iron to date and produces the most ball speed.

It sits between the brand’s Apex and Apex DCB irons and targets the game-improvement market. The X has a thicker topline and more forgiving sole than the standard Paradym iron along with noticeably stronger lofts, but it does have the pre-worn leading edge designed to make the club cut through the turf with ease to aid forgiveness.

It also uses the precise combination of internal and external Tungsten weighting, but with an additional 12g, meaning a total of 79g to help boost launch and improve ball speeds when you don’t find the center of the club.

Early testing against Callaway’s Apex DCB iron showed the Paradym X to be 26% tighter on dispersion, produce 2.5mph more ball speed, and five yards longer.

We rate it among the best mid-handicap irons available.
