What we say...
The new Mizuno JPX923 Tour iron is a forged muscle cavity for the games best ball-strikers. The brand say a new reinforced chassis gives a blade like feel.
Since 2016 when Nike pulled out of making golf equipment Mizuno have seen an uptick in iron tour usage more than any other brand. When Nike pulled out, they withdrew a huge pool of cash from the player equipment contract market, naturally leaving some players without sponsorship, which led to more tour players playing equipment they choose rather than gear they got paid to play. With Mizuno having a massive heritage for forged irons the brand saw an influx of pro’s switching to their irons, and the model most coveted was the JPX Tour. It has consistently been among the best golf irons ever since.
Modern tour pros took to the JPX Tour iron like ducks to water, as unlike Mizuno’s more traditional MP family the JPX Tour was set up for straighter hitting over ultimate shot shaping. With golf now a target game out on tour, pros often favour straighter approaches over a more shaped ball flight, so shots fall just one side or other of a line to the flag, and the JPX Tour was perfectly set-up to deliver. It’s one of the best players’ irons in the market.
Since pretty-humble beginnings the new JPX Tour franchise has now become a big deal for the company, and thanks to subtle refinements Mizuno reckon the new JPX923 Tour iron is an improvement over previous generations, here’s why.

7-iron loft: 34°
Category/Forgiveness rating: Players’ Iron / 2
Mizuno’s most played tour iron, the JPX923 Tour is one piece forged from 1025E mild carbon steel. This shallow muscle cavity is aimed at elite amateurs and professional golfers. Expect a narrower topline and sole width, and a more rounded trailing edge for cleaner turf interaction.
The 6-GW have noticeably shorter blade lengths which bring extra precision to important approaches. A super thin copper underlay elevates feel to levels similar to the brands MP-22 models. Modern players typically choose this family for its straighter hitting capability over the more workable MP-22 family.
Director of R&D at Mizuno, David Llewellyn says “the goal with the JPX923 Tour was to engineer a compact, players cavity back that looked and felt like a muscleback at impact. With the copper underlay and new topline the model is right there.”

What you need to know about the Mizuno JPX923 Tour iron
A refined head shape
We are of course talking tiny amounts, but avid Mizuno fans will spot there’s a shorter blade length in the scoring irons, and a slightly thinner more cambered sole. There’s also a thinner topline, which has been possible, without compromising feel, thanks to additional strength being added to the muscle cavity.
Copper underlay
Mizuno brought back a thin copper underlay on their MP-20 irons (in 2020), saying it was the missing ingredient from the brand’s irons that are so revered for great feel back in the 1980s. The JPX923 Tour is the first JPX iron to get the same thin coating, the brand says golfers can expect incrementally softer feel and feedback, over previous generations.
A reinforced chassis
Mizuno have used a V-Chassis (stability frame) to channel feel towards the heel of their irons for a while now, this newest model sees additional reinforcement positioned in the muscle cavity, which tour players reckon makes the model feel like a full-on muscleback blade.
