DeChambeau swings by Scottsdale before historic Greenbrier 58

Bryson DeChambeau gets “dialed in” at Scottsdale’s ‘Fit.Build.Play’ Performance Center for one of golf’s greatest-ever rounds.
Only a handful of 58s have ever been recorded in the history of golf, none on LIV Tour.
That was at least until the big-hitting American destroyed the Old White Course at Greenbrier, shooting 12-under par, and capturing his first LIV Golf title in the process.
Performances of this caliber not only take an extraordinary work rate, talent, and belief, but an uncompromising attention to detail, and hunger to dive down into the 0.1%’s that differentiate the best from the rest at this elite level.
Striving for marginal gains in his approach to everything from swing biomechanics to strength and conditioning to equipment selection, DeChambeau is a truly unique player, and one of the few capable of achieving such feats as his performance in West Virginia.
This reputation has fittingly given him the nickname of ‘The Scientist’, and as with all good science, collaboration is key, which is why DeChambeau took a detour to the experts at Scottsdale following The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.
Scottsdale Director, Bradley Stubbs said: “Bryson contacted us as he wanted to have all his clubs checked and have his shafts spine aligned using SST Puring technology which very few custom fit specialists can offer.
This is something that isn’t even available on the tour trucks.”
Alongside Scottsdale’s team of master club fitters, Bryson meticulously went through each club in his bag, revising and dialing in spin rates, ball speeds, and flight characteristics to create the most confidence-inspiring bag, and one capable of pushing his game to new heights.
And if Greenbrier is anything to go by, it’s fair to say his approach paid off, and some.
Following the data
Numbers don’t have opinions. They are hard to ignore, particularly for Bryson-like minds, which is what enabled him to put full trust in Scottsdale’s master club builders when they suggested tweaks.
Research has shown golf shafts aren’t perfectly straight or round. Structural irregularities can cause off-line bending and twisting during the swing leading to inconsistencies between clubs and higher dispersion rates.
This is where Scottsdale’s SST Puring system comes into its own, adding performance value beyond that of trial and error, and giving DeChambeau the return on investment he had hoped for.
The system analyses shaft structure and identifies its most stable bending plane before aligning with the clubhead in a new optimal orientation. The result is tighter dispersion and higher consistency, both of which are rather important if you are trying to get close to pins.
With his adjusted bag firing out the desired numbers, Bryson was on his way back across the Atlantic to prepare for his next event, LIV Golf Greenbrier.
And the rest is history as they say – or history books to be accurate.
DeChambeau joins a very exclusive 58-club, which Jim Furyk also became a member of back in 2016 at TPC Highlands, which remains the lowest round in PGA Tour history.
