The TaylorMade Kalea Premier family delivers lightweight, easy launch forgiveness, in a package that can be custom fit for women golfers.

TaylorMade have got their teeth into a new “segmentation” concept that’s already swept through mega-brands like Nike, Volkswagen and Coca-Cola.

After surveying 15,000 golfers TaylorMade say they’re in a better position to understand their behaviours, attitudes and preferences, without the traditional constraints of grouping players by gender, age or ability.

The research highlighted TaylorMade’s product line had a glaring gap for desirable, customisable performance womens’ clubs. That led them to set up a Women’s Advisory Board and the Kalea Premier is the first product range to come out of it.

The family sits between the current Kalea and Stealth families and thanks to their research TaylorMade say Kalea Premier will satisfy the demands of women golfers who want custom fitted equipment, those wanting a technology story who don’t mind paying for it and golfers who put a premium on looks.

TaylorMade are masters at making desirable irons that appeal to the mass market. The Kalea Premier is clean, there’s no pink (a decision the Women’s Advisory Board spend hours discussing) and there’s no whiff of a wide topline or huge sole, which means this is a great looking iron.

A clever Cap Back design like the Stealth iron is more efficient than a traditional cavity back and gives a sleek appearance. A Thru-Slot speed pocket in the sole protects ball speed for shots hit low on the face, and sets are available from 6 – SW.

TaylorMade say the Kalea Premier hybrids have a large face and low profile shape to create a low centre of gravity, for easy launch from the tee and turf. Like the fairway woods the V-Steel sole reduces friction and ensure the model is super versatile from the fairway, tee and even sand.

A Thru-Slot Speed Pocket in the sole maximises ball speeds for shots hit low on the face, whilst Twist Face increases consistency for typical low-heel and high-toe misses. The hybrid family runs from #4 (23°) to #7 (35°) so any iron you don’t hit with confidence can easily be replaced.

Verdict: TaylorMade Kalea Premier iron – tested by ex-TG staffer Sarah Pyett

As someone who usually plays mens regular flex steel shafted irons, I was excited to try the Kalea Premier to see if they’d be beneficial to my game. From the outset I really liked how TaylorMade have ensured the family appeal to many different golfing abilities, by allowing customisation across the range. I was fitted into a mens regular flex grahite shaft which felt stable and powerful from the off.

I warmed up on the range with a 7-iron, and after just a few shots I couldn’t believe how easy they were to hit. It felt like I didn’t need to put in nearly as much effort in order to get shots powering up into the air. I had the sensation of the club doing the work for me, and immediately saw an increase in distance compared to my current irons (the TaylorMade Rocketbladez).

After playing sevearl rounds with the Kalea Premier irons I can only say I’m really impressed. The look of the irons has given me extra confidence when addressing the ball, and I feel like I can tell where the club head is in my downswing, which has made it easy to rotate the club through impact.

The Kalea Premier range is definetly staying in my bag.
