What’s In The Bag: Celine Boutier

Today’s Golfer reviews what’s in the bag of Celine Boutier, a Major Champion and prolific winner on both LPGA and European Tours.

Celine Boutier secured her spot in Europe’s 2023 Solheim Cup team after topping the European Tour Points list ahead of Swedish duo Maja Stark and Linn Grant.

Today's Golfer What's In The Bag is brought to you in association with Callaway Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X golf balls.

The Frenchwoman has 13 professional wins to her name, the most noteworthy being her 6-stroke demolition of the field in her home country to win the Evian Championship in 2023.

Celine Boutier wins the 2023 Evian Championship

Just a week later, Boutier backed up her first Major triumph, winning at the Scottish Open and subsequently rising to a career-high 3rd in the Women’s Golf World Rankings.

Boutier has competed previously for Team Europe in the 2019 and 2021 editions of the Solheim Cup with a record of five wins, one loss, and one half, from her seven matches.

Equipment specialists PXG have supported Boutier’s journey through the amateur ranks to the professional scene and therefore feature heavily in her setup today. Let’s take a look at what’s in the bag of Celine Boutier.

What driver does Celine Boutier use?

Celine Boutier uses a PXG 0311 GEN5 driver (9°) with a Graphite Design IZ-5 S shaft

Price: 299.00 / $289.99 RRP
Boutier opts for a PXG 0311 GEN5 to cut the course down to size.

PXG isn’t joking when they say GEN5 boasts a higher MOI, improved sound and feel, more shot shape fitting potential, and an unusually good performance on high and high toe mishits.

The carbon crown GEN5 didn’t rip up any trees against the very best (remember that differences narrow at lesser speeds), but we’d choose it for the solid sound and performance, the multiple shaft options, and for it being great value for money.

The 0311 has an astonishing cost per yard of £1.02 with its nearest competitor being the Cobra Aerojet LS with a cost per yard of £1.43. When considering a driver in 2023 this will play a massive part for many golfers making the GEN5 a superb option. After the test, it showed the 0311 was competing with most of the drivers in every area including distance and dispersion, at over £100 less than the second cheapest driver on the test it's certainly worth a hit.

What fairway wood does Celine Boutier use?

Celine Boutier uses a Ping G425 Max fairway wood (14.5°) with a Diamana PD 60 stiff shaft

Boutier disrupts the heavily influenced PXG theme to her bag with a Ping G425 Max fairway wood.

Ping says this model will be the most forgiving option for the majority of golfers and they it’s reckon 4.5 yards longer than the previous G410 fairway wood, thanks to the new Face Wrap and Spinsistency tech.

We spent lots of time trawling through our fairway wood test data to see if Ping’s ‘spinsistency’ face story really stacks up. In our test pro's preferred Mitsubishi Tensei Orange shaft, the G425 was fourth best at protecting spin difference between shots, but more importantly, it was also just 0.2% back from the lowest carry drop-off; exactly the sort of additional consistency Ping rave about.

What irons does Celine Boutier use?

Celine Boutier uses PXG 0311 T GEN4 irons (6-PW) with KBS PGI 80 Tapered shafts

Price: £699.99
Boutier chooses to game the slightly older 0311 GEN4 model irons in the T-design.

T stands for Tour. The T is designed to be a more forgiving blade-style club for lower-handicap players who like the look of a smaller iron head with less offset. Expect good workability compared to the more forgiving P and XP.

What wedges does Celine Boutier use?

Celine Boutier uses PXG 0311 Sugar Daddy II Milled wedges (50°, 54°, 58°) with Modus 105 W shafts

Price: £309.00 / $299.00 RRP
Boutier opts for a three-wedge set-up with 4° of loft between each.

PXG’s 0311 wedges come at a premium price point, but thanks to being 100% CNC Milled, they are the most accurate and precise wedges money can buy.

PXG might still be a young company, but its wedge-shaping has been second to none since day one. We love the straight leading edge and how the club sits at address. The classy satin finish is also as simple as they come.

You will need to accept full-face grooves across all lofts – that’s how PXG has set the family up – but if you can, you’ll get a wedge that was our 5th-highest spinning (9,438 rpm), and hit shots into an area 24% tighter than our test average.

What makes the Sugar Daddy II worth making such a sizeable investment, is the ability to go lighter, heavier, longer, or shorter without changing the center of gravity. No other brands of wedges can compete with that right now.

Introduced on Tour last September, the 2023 Titleist Pro V1x – arguably the best golf ball in the game – had been in development since the end of 2021.

The urethane cover on the Pro V1x is created by mixing two components, with the liquid urethane cast into Titleist-manufactured cavities to form the appropriate dimple pattern into the cover. Titleist says the precise timing and temperature are integral to the consistency of golf’s No.1 ball.

The 348-dimple design was a huge change in the 2021 ball and, unsurprisingly, that remains on the new model to optimize aerodynamics. The casing works with the new core to reduce excess long-game spin while combining with the cover to create greenside spin.
