What’s In The Bag: Ryan Fox

What’s in the bag of big-hitting DP World Tour winner Ryan Fox? We delve into the New Zealander’s equipment.
Jump To: Fox’s WITB
Ryan Fox failed to read Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup preparation script, shooting a final round 67 to leapfrog, Tyrrell Hatton, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Tommy Fleetwood, and Ludvig Aberg to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on 18-under par.
Victory at one of the DP World Tour’s flagship events was Fox’s first Rolex Series title and fourth on the European Tour, moving him to the cusp of the top 30 in the Official Golf World Rankings.
Ryan Fox enjoyed a superb 2022 with six top-10s and two victories. He started the year with his first DP World Tour title in three years with a five-shot victory over Ross Fisher at the Ras Al Khaimah Classic.
The 35-year-old put himself in contention for several more titles across the summer before lifting his second title of the season, and third DP World Tour title of his career, at the Alfred Dunhill Links in October.
The New Zealander also had an emotional win at the Home of Golf in the pro-am tournament where he has previously partnered with close friend Shane Warne. The Australian cricket legend, who passed away aged 52 earlier in 2022, was a regular in the Dunhill field and Fox paid tribute after lifting the trophy.
“It means a lot,” Fox said. “To be honest, the only person I can really think of at the moment is Warney. Means a lot to this event and great mates, and just a shame he’s not here. I’m going to enjoy this one with the family.”
Fox, whose first DP World Tour victory had come at the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth in 2019, is the son of former All Blacks rugby union player Grant Fox, and grandson of cricketer Merv Wallace. Three members of the same family competing at an elite level in three different sports – some genes!
The man from Auckland is a Srixon staff player, playing 12 of the brand’s clubs and the Z-Star XV golf ball. Let’s take a closer look at what’s in the Kiwi’s bag in 2023.

What driver does Ryan Fox use?
Ryan Fox uses a Srixon ZX5 MKII driver (9.5°) with a Fujikura Ventus Blue 7 TX shaft
It looks lovely, sounds great and there’s a touch of high launch draw bias built in. We’d play it, but in tough economic times, the price tag is hard to justify, especially knowing there are other excellent drivers out there for less.

What fairway wood does Ryan Fox use?
Ryan Fox uses a Srixon ZX MKII fairway wood (14°) with a Fujikura Ventus shaft
At 257 yards, the ZX MK II was our longest fairway wood of 2023 by three yards, which is seriously impressive considering the super strong opposition.
The backspin and shot height were below our test averages, which highlights how the model is a better fit for slightly stronger players. If that’s you, you’ll be delighted to know the model hit shots into a 28% smaller dispersion area than our test average. A top performer in the right hands.

What utility iron does Ryan Fox use?
Ryan Fox uses a Srixon Z U85 utility iron (20°) with a Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 shaft

What irons does Ryan Fox use?
Ryan Fox uses Srixon ZX5 MKII irons (3-5) and Srixon ZX7 MKII (6-PW) irons with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shafts
Our pro was really impressed by the feel and feedback from the ZX7, and the data it produced against its peers (see our 2021 Players’ Iron Test here)is undeniably impressive. A 7-iron carry of 168 yards was our third longest in testing, but more impressive than that was how the ZX7 combined that power with only dropping seven yards (4.2%) between on- and off-center strikes (third best), which really helps consistency and scoring on the course.

What wedges does Ryan Fox use?
Ryan Fox uses Cleveland RTX-6 wedges (50°-10 Mid, 56°-10 Mid, 60°-06 Low) with True Temper Dyanamic Gold X100 and S400 shafts
We love the compact size, the straight leading-edge profile, and the new super-aggressive CNC Milling pattern on the toe, which brings full-face groove levels of stopping power to traditional groove wedges.
Our best 2023 wedge test data has the ZipCore hovering just under average levels of backspin, but with so many factors to consider when buying new wedges, it’s worth remembering you should never just pick the highest spinning wedges.

Ryan Fox uses a Ping Anser 2D putter
The Anser is very much a traditional toe and heel-weighted blade with extra forgiveness and stability thanks to the new tungsten face weights. A good fit for slight arc strokes.

What golf shoes does Ryan Fox wear?
Ryan Fox wears FootJoy Pro SL golf shoes
The best spikeless golf shoe for those with a bigger budget
A StratoFoam midsole takes the Pro SL to new levels of comfort. It provides softer cushioning from heel to toe over its predecessor and cushioning and makes walking 18 a breeze.
As for the upper, FootJoy’s ChromoSkin leather is just about as good as it gets. It looks great, holds its shape, cleans easily, and is fully waterproof.
FootJoy have also created a new version – The Carbon – which comes with a carbon fiber insert to reinforce stability in the heel while keeping the front of the foot flexible.
It uses the flex of the carbon fiber inlay to elastically snap back to its natural position resulting in more energy return while walking and reduced fatigue.
