Joaquín Niemann joined LIV in August 2022 as captain of Torque GC. The Chilean remains the captain of Torque GC and achieved his maiden victory on the LIV Golf Tour in 2024 at LIV Golf Mayakoba.
Following a career-best 59 in the first round of the tournament, Niemann stormed to a five-shot lead over Patrick Reed of 4Aces GC. The Torque GC captain became the second golfer in LIV Golf’s short history to card a sub-60 round – the first being Bryson Dechambeau’s impressive 58 at LIV Golf Greenbrier in 2023.
After a blemish-free first round, the 25-year-old fired in a one-over-par 72 in the second round which included a two-stroke penalty, that was assessed following the conclusion of his round, for taking relief incorrectly. It meant that Niemann started the final round with just a two-shot advantage rather than the four-shots he would have thought he had when he signed his card after the 36th hole.
Niemann battled his way through the final round to produce a one-under-par finish to force a playoff with Fireballs GC captain, Sergio Garcia, who carded a brilliant five-under-par round of 66. After four playoff holes, Niemann finally prevailed with a birdie to win his first LIV Golf Tour event under the stars in Mexico.
His victory at LIV Golf’s opening tournament of the 2024 season was the 11th of his career. Niemann’s most recent victory before winning at Mayakoba was also in a playoff at the ISPS Handa Australian Open in 2023.
Niemann won the third event on the 2024 DP World Tour calendar thanks to an eagle on the second playoff hole to defeat Japan’s Rikuya Hoshino. With that win in Sydney, the Chilean earned himself a place in the field for the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon.
Unlike his two most recent victories, Niemann won in commanding fashion at the 2022 Genesis Invitational on the PGA Tour with a wire-to-wire whitewash of the field. That week Niemann broke the 36 and 54-hole scoring records.
As a 20-year-old Niemann became the first Chilean golfer to win on the PGA Tour at the Greenbrier Classic in 2019. If any other compatriot goes on to win a PGA Tour event it’s highly unlikely they’ll be younger.
Niemann had tasted success seven times before joining the PGA Tour. Those seven victories all came on the Chilean Tour as a teenager, barring his last.
After following in the footsteps of Jon Rahm and Jordan Spieth in earning his PGA Tour card without needing to play the Web.com Tour finals, the former Amateur World No.1 did break into the top 20 players in the men’s Official World Golf Rankings. However, now a full member of the LIV Golf Tour Niemann is unable to earn enough World Ranking points to keep himself high in the rankings.
