The Bay of Saint Michel is a World UNESCO Heritage Site that attracts visitors from far and wide looking to catch of glimpse of the stunning scenery and breathtaking historical sites. This area of France also attracts golfers from all over the world because it’s home to some of the most renowned golf courses on the planet. Golf courses in this area pose many challenges, but perhaps the biggest challenge is leaving!
Let’s take a look at three of the best golf courses you can play around the Bay of Saint Michel…
Golf des Ormes
This par 72 golf course was designed by architect Antoine d’Ormesson and opened in 1989. Described as a jewel in the heart of nature, Golf des Ormes perfectly blends harmoniously into its natural surroundings.
Situated just 20km south of the Bay of Saint Michel, this golf course spreads itself over some sixty hectares as it passes through vast wooded areas and meanders its way around water hazards.
While making your way around this picturesque golf course, expect to be treated to iconic views of the castle of Les Ormes – it only adds to the charm of the entire resort.
Golf de Granville
Golf de Granville was created in 1912 by Shapland Colt and Henry G. Hawtree. There is the opportunity to play either an 18-hole golf course or a 9-hole golf course, both of which offer a variety of challenges to golfers.
You could easily mistake Golf de Granville for a centuries-old golf course situated in Ireland or Scotland because it shares similar characteristics to those cherished links courses with an air of authenticity that often isn’t felt outside of the UK.
Golf de Clécy
18 holes – par 72 – 6,409 yards
Labelled as one of the most beautiful natural golf courses in France, in the heart of Suisse Normande, you’ll find Golf de Clécy, an 18-hole golf course that was designed by architect Bill Backer.
Strategy is paramount when plotting your way around this technical golf course, but it’s hard to constantly concentrate on the golf given how amazing the surroundings are.
Heading south, into the Anjou Val de Loire you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to outstanding golf courses. Traverse through vineyards and challenge yourself on the banks of the Loire by treating yourself to a GolfExperience in this area of France. The Anjou Val de Loire is renowned for its mouthwatering cuisine and exceptional wines, making it a fabulous destination for couples and fourballs.
Let’s take a look at three of the best golf courses you can play in the Anjou Val de Loire…
Golf de Baugé
An undulating golf course to remember. Golf de Baugé offers an 18-hole golf course surrounded by lush greenery, designed by Alain Prat. Known for its high-quality and pure greens, this golf course rewards golfers with impressive scores that know their way around the flatstick.
Natural obstacles littered in this calm and technical layout offer stimulating challenges for golfers of all levels. The clubhouse is most definitely memorable, it has a charming atmosphere being built into former stables.
Golf de Mignaloux Beauvoir
Spanning over ninety hectares, Golf de Mignaloux Beauvoir offers absolutely everything any golf enthusiast could wish for. There isn’t much undulation to note around this golf course but it’s packed with trees and a handful of water hazards just waiting for that wayward shot.
The trees at Golf de Mignaloux Beauvoir add to the character of this golf course by creating an optical illusion that will have you doubting yardages and double-checking your numbers no matter where you are on the course.
The 18th hole was reworked in 2023 (along with the rest of the course) to become the highlight of the course and send golfers away with fond memories of a beautiful 19th-century chapel situated behind the 18th green – should they overcome the waterfall overlooking the lake in front of the 18th green.
Anjou Golf & Country Club
Designed by Fred W. Hawtree, Anjou Golf & Country Club has all the quirks and characteristics you’d expect of a parkland golf course in England. It’s a brilliant test of golf, featuring a host of formidable obstacles including water hazards, huge oak trees, and bountiful doglegs.
Anjou Golf & Country Club spans generations. In the mid-1980s, the golf course was founded by a family descendent of Count Roland de La Poype, a former Second World War fighter pilot. This story, when combined with the natural, unspoiled landscape, and welcoming clubhouse only adds to the charm of this golf course.
