Best Golf Resorts in Great Britain and Ireland | Golf World Top 100

What are the best golf resorts in the UK and Ireland? The latest Golf World Top 100 ranking reveals all so you can plan the perfect golf break in Britain or the Emerald Isle.
Welcome to our ranking of the Top 100 Best Golf Resorts in the UK & Ireland. I can tell you a LOT of thought and effort has gone into producing something that can really help you decide where you might fancy going for your next golf break.
How we ranked the best golf resorts in the UK & Ireland
Our marking criteria is as follows:
Golf course(s): The quality of the course(s) – with second or third courses duly recognized. 40 marks
Accommodation: The range, quality, and quantity of the accommodation. 20 marks
Non-golf amenities: Additional facilities that can make a resort a family and couples attraction. 20 marks
Setting: Lots of 15s for standard countryside locations, but those that bit special get a boost with 18, 19s and even 20s. 20 marks
Golf is clearly the key category, but we take accommodation and non-golf amenities into account fairly strongly because we didn’t want a list of ‘courses with rooms’ and to end up with a list of Top 100-ranked courses with a Dormie House. We wanted to include rounded resorts that could appeal to couples and families as well as those for golf nuts.
What is a golf resort?
We define it like this: the course and accommodation have to be owned by the same company and have the accommodation on the same site. Any time there is a short transfer the resort loses a mark in the ‘setting’ category.
From the last list, Stoke Park, Stapleford Park or Selsdon Park were not considered as they are undergoing renovations or closed to the public.
Skibo Castle is also not in because, while you can play the course with a green fee, staying there is only open to members or prospective members, so we felt it wasn’t appropriate to include.
Who’s on the panel?
I was helped with the list by panelists from the various courses rankings we produce – GB&I, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland – as well as input from leading agencies Golfbreaks and Your Golf Travel.
Personally, I’ve been to 89 of these resorts and I’m happy to state that I have a strong influence on this particular ranking. So, in summary, if you really don’t agree with something, it’s mainly me to blame…
Right, that’s enough preamble, let’s get this ranking underway. I hope you enjoy and find it useful and insightful. Please let me know your thoughts on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Or you can send us an email.

65. Forest Pines
Brigg, Lincolnshire, England
Courses 22 Accommodation 14 Amenities 15 Setting 15 Total 66
What it offers: Its name informs the character of the golf. Three loops of nine that are England Top 200 class. A nice four-star, 188-bedroom hotel with exceptionally good food, plus excellent health club options.
GW verdict: Its position is a deserved rise for this Lincolnshire venue, a really good all-round option.
64. Oulton Hall
Leeds, West Yorkshire, England

Liphook, Hampshire, England
Course 20 Accommodation 17 Amenities 16 Setting 15 Total 68

Significant elevation change adds to the drama and small greens, bunkers and ponds to the challenge. There are 150 spacious rooms in the hotel that are just the start of the accommodation options, and an extensive spa and leisure centre.
GW verdict: A rise to its highest-ever position for Old Thorns – but we don’t expect it to rest there.
This is a top-60 resort despite having just one course. The accommodation options are fantastic, ranging from swish hotel rooms and chic self-catering apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the course, to, yes, eco pods.
The spa is superb and renowned locally, while the gym is the best in the list – only The Vale or Gleneagles come close to it. This is a well-run, well-equipped golf resort and if you are looking for a base to play the elite courses of Hampshire and Surrey, this is your option.

What it offers: A Martin Hawtree-designed course backed-up by the thrill-a-minute, water-dominated Repton six-holer – including the 5th, based on the 17th at Sawgrass and playing to the same yardage. The hotel is gorgeous and the spa – where the private steam room, sauna and spa bath are just some of the attractions – is very possibly the best in this entire list (see right).
GW verdict: One of the biggest rises in the list for this luxurious North Yorkshire venue, set in 300 acres of landscaped gardens and parkland – and the jump actually doesn’t feel quite enough. Expect it to comfortably rise into the top 50 next time, and it has the class to threaten the top 40.
53. Manor House & Ashbury
Okehampton, Devon, England
Courses 19 Accommodation 14 Amenities 20 Setting 16 Total 69
What it offers: Easy to describe, albeit not with brevity: it has four 18-hole courses, an 18-hole par 3 course and a nine-hole academy course all on one site, the Ashbury Resort, plus over 70 sport, craft, leisure and spa activities. 50. Tewkesbury Park
Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England
Course 19 Accommodation 18 Amenities 17 Setting 16 Total 70
What it offers: A course on rolling parkland and a wonderful cosy hotel with spa facilities and garden games to keep kids entertained.
GW verdict: The rise and rise of Tewkesbury continues. It was a fixture in the middle of the second 50 of the ranking until a £3m investment upgraded the Peter McEvoy course and the beautiful bedrooms. That has turned it into a top-50 resort.
I’m spoiling the discovery by saying this, but there is a tangible feel of Tewkesbury being family-run; you feel it in the thoughtful touches in the room and in the thoughtfulness of the staff. It is the antithesis of a soulless corporate hotel where rules must be followed because, well, just because. Staff here will go out of their way to make your stay a memorable one.
The course is thoroughly pleasant, the food excellent, and I am not exaggerating when I say the rooms will really surprise you. They are top-20 material. You’ll never want to leave!

48. Murrayshall
Scone, Perthshire, Scotland
Courses 24 Accommodation 17 Amenities 13 Setting 16 Total 70
What it offers: A Scotland Top 100-calibre course and a shorter-but-narrower No.2, backed up by beautiful accommodation either in the bedrooms in the historic house, or the Lynedoch Suites in an appealing, separate building 50 yards away.
GW verdict: If Gleneagles isn’t in your budget you would be well advised to look here. Lacks the amenities, but lovely golf and even better lodging.
47. Fota Island
Fota Island, Cork, Ireland
Courses 24 Accommodation 16 Amenities 15 Setting 15 Total 70
What it offers: Three championship-standard course configurations – the original Deerpark, Belvelly and Barryscourt. Plus a stylish five-star hotel or self-catering in a lodge.

46. Trevose
Padstow, Cornwall, England
Course 27 Accommodation 14 Amenities 10 Setting 19 Total 70
What it offers: An England Top 100 course that has been notably improved by Tom Mackenzie, plus decent on-site lodge accommodation.

Courses 25 Accommodation 15 Amenities 15 Setting 15 Total 70
What it offers: Two courses – the Arden by Donald Steel, which has hosted seven English Opens, and the shorter Aylesford – plus a comprehensive hotel.

Course 21 Accommodation 18 Amenities 16 Setting 16 Total 71

42. Slieve Russell
Ballyconnell, Cavan, Ireland
Course 21 Accommodation 18 Amenities 17 Setting 16 Total 72

What it offers: A Dave Thomas-designed course that is in the Scotland Top 100, complemented by a delightful hotel – the first ‘Destination by Hyatt’ property in the UK – within an historic house.
GW verdict: Adding to its amenities – the luxury spa and heated outdoor swimming pool – has helped The Roxburghe make this move up the list. A charming option already, and extensive development taking place across the property should see further rises in future.
The addition of 58 rooms to the on-site hotel plus the opening of 12 cottages add notably to the breadth of accommodation – and a further 49 cottages will be added by the end of 2024. A superb restaurant and bar that is as appealing on a cosy winter’s night as a sun-kissed July evening.

29. Dundonald
Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland
Course 27 Accommodation 18 Amenities 12 Setting 17 Total 74
What it offers: A Scotland Top 100 course that is indubitably GB&I calibre, plus brand-new lodge accommodation and dining that is enticing non-golfers to the resort’s Canny Crow restaurant from miles around.
GW verdict: This is a notable entry to the list from a club that is now really making its mark. Where once Dundonald had a fabulous Kyle Phillips links and a modular building for a clubhouse, they now have seriously good accommodation on site to back up their high-class golf. No-one who has been there has reported back anything other than positively on the resort; a very good option as a base for an Ayrshire break.

Course 22 Accommodation 19 Amenities 17 Setting 17 Total 75
What it offers: Handmade mattresses. Michelin-starred food. A quirky, entertaining course by Peter Alliss and his design partner Clive Clarke. And plenty of amenities too.

25. Dromoland Castle
Newmarket-on-Fergus, Clare, Ireland
Course 24 Accommodation 19 Amenities 17 Setting 15 Total 75

24. Slaley Hall
Hexham, Northumberland, England

23. Portmarnock Hotel
Malahide, Dublin, Ireland
Course 25 Accommodation 17 Amenities 14 Setting 19 Total 75
What it offers: The former home of the Jameson whiskey family has been beautifully converted into a resort on the outskirts of Dublin, with a characterful hotel overlooking a proper links by Bernhard Langer.

Courses 28 Accommodation 16 Amenities 15 Setting 16 Total 75
What it offers: Two England Top 200-ranked courses – the woodland duo of the Longcross and Hunt. A really good spa and gym head the amenities.
GW verdict: A great base for a Surrey break, and Foxhills is getting even better thanks to significant investment. Two fine courses and terrific hotel; its highest-ever ranking.
21. Trump Aberdeen
Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Course 32 Accommodation 19 Amenities 5 Setting 19 Total 75
What it offers: A World Top 100 course that is a favourite for many well-travelled golfers, for it is a high-octane experience. Macleod House continues the eye-popping quality, a beautiful conversion of an ancient home.
GW verdict: If you don’t want or need too many amenities (it’s mainly superb food, here), this is perfect.
20. St Mellion
Saltash, Cornwall, England
Courses 28 Accommodation 15 Amenities 16 Setting 17 Total 76
What it offers: A course that has been a GB&I Top 100 entrant and a multiple European Tour venue, plus a good No.2. A large hotel with lots of amenities.
GW verdict: Cornish complex impresses with its quantity of golf and has plenty of non-golf activities. Not quite the opulence in the hotel of others in the top 20.
19. Machrihanish Dunes
Machrihanish, Argyll, Scotland
Course 30 Accommodation 17 Amenities 10 Setting 19 Total 76
What it offers: A GB&I Top 100 course that is more popular than ever and the Ugadale Hotel, 10 minutes drive away, that overlooks the world-famous 1st tee of Machrihanish.
GW verdict: This David McLay Kidd links is in roaring form these days and the Ugadale – including adorable cottages – is superb. Awesome location.
18. Archerfield
Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland
Courses 34 Accommodation 19 Amenities 7 Setting 17 Total 77
What it offers: Two celebrated Scotland Top 100 courses offering something a bit different, allied to gorgeous townhouses among the pines. Limited amenities other than a spa.
GW verdict: It is a little bit ‘courses with rooms’, but Archerfield deserves this place; the golf is Top 100 class; the accommodation might be even better.
17. Druids Glen
Newtown Mount Kennedy, Wicklow, Ireland
Courses 27 Accommodation 17 Amenities 17 Setting 16 Total 77
What it offers: A recently overhauled resort south of Dublin with two renovated Ireland Top 100 courses and a large hotel, excellent dining and a spa and health club.
GW verdict: The Glen by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock is an Irish Open host and the Heath a fine back-up. Expect to see it rise.
16. The Machrie
Islay, Argyll
Course 31 Accommodation 18 Amenities 9 Setting 19 Total 77
What it offers: A World Top 100 course following its overhaul by D.J. Russell and a brand-new hotel offering high-end accommodation and superb food.
GW verdict: The links is the star attraction here, one of the finest courses in GB&I and on its own worth the journey to Islay. But the hotel is earning rave reviews, too. Dining heads the limited amenities; this is a golfers’ golf break.
15. Lough Erne
Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland
Course 26 Accommodation 18 Amenities 16 Setting 18 Total 78
What it offers: A course by Sir Nick Faldo that has been in our GB&I Top 100, plus a hotel that is every inch its five-star status. Lovely lakeside setting.
GW verdict: Testament to the quality of Lough Erne is that it is in the top 15 with just one course; with even a modest second course it could be seven places higher.
14. The Belfry
Wishaw, West Midlands, England
Courses 33 Accommodation 15 Amenities 15 Setting 15 Total 78
What it offers: Three 18-hole courses including a Ryder Cup host, and a recently revamped hotel with restaurants, spa, mini golf and adventure playground.
GW verdict: Falls as we place less emphasis on its 54 holes – the PGA and Derby are a step down in class from the Brabazon. Hotel investment keeps it top 15. Great for groups.
13. Old Course Hotel/Duke’s
St Andrews, Fife , Scotland
Course 24 Accommodation 20 Amenities 16 Setting 18 Total 78
What it offers: The world’s most famous golf hotel, overlooking the world’s most famous course, allied to a Scotland Top 100 course, The Duke’s – a heathland set-up just outside the town.
GW verdict: In some ways this was a tricky one to rank as it loses a mark because of the distance between the course and hotel, which we prefer to be walkable rather than a five-minute shuttle. The hotel is absolutely wonderful, though, and in addition to it oozing luxury, you are obviously looking out over the most famous course in the world – and everything seems that bit better when that’s the case.
The breakfast would be magnificent in any setting but the coffee, orange juice, scrambled eggs and salmon – not to mention awesome haggis – all taste just that bit better when you’re looking at the Old’s 18th as you eat.
The Duke’s is perfectly enjoyable and a nice complement, even if the majority of the appeal is in drawing back your curtains to see the most famous patch of grass in golf.
12. The Grove
Watford, Hertfordshire, England
Course 27 Accommodation 17 Amenities 18 Setting 16 Total 78
What it offers: A parkland course that has managed that rare feat – a place in our GB&I Top 100 in the past decade. It has hosted a WGC tournament and European Tour events. The handsome hotel is arguably even more impressive, mixing elegance and pedigree in the rooms in the old part of the estate house with chic, minimalist ones in the newer wing. Arguably the best spa and gym in the 100 lead a list of activities that seem to grow by the year. A venue where all ages will be deliriously happy.
GW verdict: The Grove is ranked as the No.1 resort in England for the first time, recognition that while it has only 18 holes, the course is high class and it excels in the other categories. Even in its setting it scores adequately because, while it is not thrillingly coastal, despite it being very pleasingly accessible from the M25, it is enjoyably leafy and peaceful. Service isn’t a factor in our ranking, but The Grove is peerless in this regard.
11. Celtic Manor
Newport, South Wales
Courses 33 Accommodation 15 Amenities 15 Setting 15 Total 78
What it offers: The former Ryder Cup host has the superstar Twenty Ten course along with the excellent Roman Road and Montgomerie. In terms of quality, and as Wales top-50 courses, the supporting cast are hard to split. A nicely appointed hotel and plenty of activities elevate the experience further.
GW verdict: Credit to Celtic Manor for holding its own among the frankly six-star luxury all around it. A terrific all-rounder that is also great value – an added but unmarked bonus.
10. Fairmont St Andrews
St Andrews, Fife, Scotland
Courses 26 Accommodation 18 Amenities 16 Setting 19 Total 79
What it offers: Two Scottish Top 100 courses, both with superb locations overlooking the North Sea. One of the best hotels in the 100 and an incredibly wide variety of amenities.
GW verdict: A notable rise into the top 10 for the first time for a resort that has always been really, really good and is now getting even better thanks to significant investment. Simply world-class.
9. Mount Juliet
Thomastown, Kilkenny, Ireland
Course 25 Accommodation 20 Amenities 18 Setting 16 Total 79
What it offers: A lush parkland course that’s been in our GB&I Top 100 and a five-star hotel with a range of luxury suites. Amenities include a spa, archery, falconry and fishing.
GW verdict: An exceptional golf resort that fits seamlessly in the top 10 despite having just the one course.
8. Trump International Golf Links Ireland (Doonbeg)
Doonbeg, Clare, Ireland
Course 30 Accommodation 20 Amenities 9 Setting 20 Total 79
What it offers: A GB&I Top-60 course, an Atlantic Ocean setting that the Top 100 Editor is obsessed with, and accommodation that oozes class.
GW verdict: We loved Greg Norman’s original design and Martin Hawtree’s tweaks have proved widely popular. The cottages are brilliant and did we mention the location? It’s an absolutely epic No.8!
7. Carton House
Maynooth, Kildare, Ireland
Courses 28 Accommodation 19 Amenities 16 Setting 16 Total 79
What it offers: Two 18-hole courses in our Irish Top 100 – the Tour-host Montgomerie and the more cuddly O’Meara – plus a huge, sumptuous hotel in a peaceful parkland estate.
GW verdict: A nice rise for a seriously good resort west of Dublin that will definitely not disappoint. An excellent all-rounder.
6. Ardfin
Jura, Argyll, Scotland
Course 32 Accommodation 20 Amenities 7 Setting 20 Total 79
What it offers: A World Top 100 course and breathtakingly beautiful renovated cottage accommodation.
GW verdict: A fall for Ardfin, solely as it lacks for non-golf amenities. It’s an amazing place, but only really for golfers – which is naturally our main thrust, hence it is No.6. Super expensive, but we aren’t judging that.
5. The K Club
Straffan, Kildare, Ireland
Courses 27 Accommodation 19 Amenities 18 Setting 15 Total 79
What it offers: A Ryder Cup host and a No.2 good enough to be inside our Ireland Top 100. A seriously opulent hotel, with rooms as spacious as a flat. Amenities from fishing to falconry and kayaking to whiskey tasting.
GW verdict: In a top 10 of some movement, The K Club retains its top-five placing because recent investment there has made it better than ever.
4. Rosapenna
Letterkenny, Donegal, Ireland
Courses 40 Accommodation 15 Amenities 8 Setting 18 Total 81
What it offers: Three 18-hole links: one in the World Top 100, two in the GB&I ranking and all three in the top 50 of the Ireland list. Ever-improving accommodation options, and a wonderful setting on the edge of Sheephaven Bay.
GW verdict: Rosapenna leapt into the top 10 last time as a result of the opening of the new St Patrick’s Links by Tom Doak. We only had limited knowledge of how good it was then, but now we have intimate experience of it – and it is incredible.
Straight in at No.32 in the World list, it is backed up superbly by Sandy Hills (GB&I No.79) and Old Tom (Ireland No.27). This is the ultimate one-stop golf resort now and in all honesty it probably deserves more than 40 marks for the courses.
Rosapenna are increasing to 70 rooms in 2023, with eight new beach-level suites – No.4 on this list is impressive, but the Casey family are set on getting even better.
3. Adare Manor
Adare, Limerick, Ireland
Course 30 Accommodation 20 Amenities 20 Setting 16 Total 86
What it offers: What doesn’t it offer? World-class parkland course, world-class hotel and world-class amenities.
GW verdict: Its hotel rivals Gleneagles for the No.1 in this ranking – don’t ever ask us to choose our favorite. If you want smaller and cosier, Adare will get the nod. It’s characterful and opulent, whether you’re looking at a chandelier in the lobby, relaxing in a room so exquisite you will never want to leave it, or simply descending the centuries-old staircase.
The golf course is special. Really special. Investment and nous has turned it from a perfectly decent parkland into one that manages to split Ireland’s 10 greatest links in our ranking. Just look at which big names it is above…
Its Ryder Cup pedigree (2027 host) will only add to allure of Adare the course and Adare Manor the resort.
To be a comfortable No.3 with only 18 holes is a staggering achievement.
2. Trump Turnberry
Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland
Courses 37 Accommodation 19 Amenities 18 Setting 20 Total 94
What it offers: A course ranked by us as the World No.4, along with the revamped King Robert the Bruce, both of which were overhauled by Martin Ebert. Plus a hotel that underwent almost as extensive an upgrade.
GW verdict: A setting matched by only three others in the list, which is a key part of a world-class course that is the main attraction for visiting despite the presence of a glitzy hotel that has its own iconic location.
1. Gleneagles
Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland
Courses 40 Accommodation 20 Amenities 20 Setting 19 Total 99
What it offers: You probably don’t need to be told… Gleneagles speaks for itself. But to confirm: three 18-hole courses, with the lowest-ranked one a Ryder Cup venue and Scottish Top 100 fixture. The King’s and Queen’s are in the GB&I Top 100. Then add in breathtakingly good accommodation, exceptional and varied dining, a bewildering array of amenities and a gorgeous Perthshire setting.
GW verdict The third list that Gleneagles has 99/100 in – it’s hard to believe that mark will ever change unless we give its Setting a 10, which we so easily could. Its Courses are worth more than 40 in truth, but that would mean many others would have to receive a harsh-looking 14 or 15. As sure a guarantee of success as a golfer receiving a dozen premium balls for Christmas.
