Who were the leading scorers for Team Europe and Team USA at the 2023 Ryder Cup and how many points did every player win at Marco Simone?
Two years on from his emotional interview having lost three of his four matches in a record 19-9 Ryder Cup defeat at Whistling Straits, the tears were flowing again for Rory McIlroy as he stepped off the 17th green with a 3&1 win over Sam Burns and a fourth point of the week.
The four-time Major champion was only denied an unbeaten week by Patrick Cantlay’s 18th-hole heroics on Saturday evening – and, incredibly, that was the only time he fell behind all week.
It was McIlroy’s best-ever performance at a Ryder Cup and saw us name him as player of the tournament in our Ryder Cup grading. His previous best had seen him win three points and, having appeared in all five matches, Whistling Straits, remains the only time he hasn’t teed it up in every session (he sat out on Saturday afternoon).
While the Northern Irishman was Europe’s leading point scorer, three players achieved an undefeated week. Tyrrell Hatton, making his third appearance, had his most successful Ryder Cup to date with three-and-a-half points from four matches. Jon Rahm gained three points from four matches with two wins and two ties, while rookie Bob MacIntyre gained two-and-a-half points from his three matches.
The stunning 6.5-1.5 opening day saw all of Team Europe off the mark and only Matt Fitzpatrick, Nicolai Hojgaard and Sepp Straka were unable to add further points to their tallies.
McIlroy and Rahm came into the week with suggestions they couldn’t be considered Ryder Cup greats due to their winning points percentages. Both leave having vastly improved that number with McIlroy’s record improving from 12-12-4 to 16-12-4 and Rahm’s from 4-3-2 to 6-3-2.
There was less to celebrate for Team USA, with Max Homa one of very few bright spots as he led their scoring charts with three points from a possible four on his Ryder Cup debut. None of Zach Johnson’s team managed to avoid defeat with World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, three-time Major champion, and five-time Ryder Cupper Rickie Fowler all failing to win a match.
Patrick Cantlay endured a disastrous start to the week with two defeats alongside friend and regular team golf partner Xander Schauffele but finished as the team’s joint second-highest points scorer thanks to his Saturday fourballs heroics and a 2&1 win over Justin Rose in the singles. Open champion Brian Harman also took two points from four matches on debut.
Fowler, who only played two sessions all week – the first and last – was the only player not to score any points and he’s now tasted defeat in four of his five appearances. The 2016 victory at Hazeltine was his sole victory.
