Sherwood Forest Golf Club is frequently placed on our list of the best golf courses in England – this year the heathland course ranked number 45.
England is known for its outstanding heathland golf and links golf. Sherwood Forest Golf Club is home to one of the finest heathland golf courses in the country that very often plays like a links golf course thanks to its characteristic narrow fairways that are firm and fast.
Sherwood Forest Golf Club was the winner of Tournament Venue of the Year at the 2023 England Golf Awards having successfully hosted the 2022 McGregor Trophy. The Championship golf course at Sherwood Forest Golf Club doesn’t only feature firm and fast fairways – this is a trait of the greens too.
The Nottinghamshire golf course is well-known for its impressive greens that run smooth and true. Being a heathland golf course originally designed by Harry Colt and later enhanced by James Braid Sherwood Forest Golf Club boasts a course rich with quirky and testing holes.
Despite there being zero water on the golf course, there are plenty of obstacles to overcome throughout the round. Notably, 98 bunkers that have been expertly positioned to catch out even the slightest of wayward golf shots.
You’ll need to bring your A-game to Sherwood Forest if you have any hope of scoring well. To score well the importance of hitting sweet and straight tee shots cannot be overstated, with punishing swathes of heather encompassing the fairways and demanding the ball to carry off the tee.
The easier nine at Sherwood Forest is undoubtedly the front nine, so be sure to save your best golf for the turn home! The back nine is extremely demanding with two long par-3s and only the one par-5, which in no way is a guaranteed par or better.
No matter how you play, you’re assured to have an enjoyable time playing around one of the best golf heathland golf courses England has to offer. The scenery surrounding the golf course is outstanding, and the landscape of the golf course is breathtaking.
The clubhouse boasts a warm and friendly atmosphere, and it serves as the perfect location to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat while watching golfers start their round, tee off on the first par-5 on the course, or tidy up their round on the last.
Whatever time of year you decide to play at Sherwood Forest Golf Club you’ll be delighted with how the course plays and you’ll be itching to return in the not-too-distant future!
