What we say...

Join me as I review the updated FootJoy Tour Alpha 2.0 Golf shoe and find out if these are still one of the most stable options for golfers on the market.

Building on two years of success since they launched in 2022, the FootJoy Tour Alpha is back with a bang with version 2.0! As a brand that’s job is to make the best golf shoes in the game there is no wonder why they’ve once again hit the nail on the head with the latest Tour Alpha golf shoe. When they launched two years ago FootJoy had created one of the most stable shoes in golf thanks to the molded heel cup and optimized performance stabilizer (OPS) which still feature in the shoe today.

I personally have never struggled to find a pair of FootJoy golf shoes that I dislike and you can add the Tour Alpha’s to the pile of which I love. A player who is also a fan of these shoes is Open Champion, Brian Harman who wore them on his way to victory at Royal Liverpool in 2023, he also wore a limited edition colorway at the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone.

This is not a shoe that FootJoy have pushed out to the consumer as well as some of their Premiere models but don’t be fooled as this is still a great golf shoe. It is what I would call proper golf footwear, built to last and built for the links, the Tour Alpha 2.0 will certainly leave no stone unturned when it comes to performing on the course.

Initial thoughts

Having only seen the older model and not worn them I couldn’t wait to get this pair out on the course and try them for myself. The shoes really do look the part, the high-quality ChromoSkin feels like it’s built to last it also adds to the premium look and feel of the shoe. The Tour Alpha 2.0 certainly isn’t the lightest shoe on the market but on foot, you don’t notice it as much as you do in hand. The updated style is very tasteful and continues down the road of modern and sporty which will suit the eye of most golfers.

Knowing how good the Ortholite fitbeds are I knew even before putting the shoe on how comfortable they were going to be. I’d say that nowadays with all the advancements we’ve had in the footwear industry, for a shoe not to be comfortable out of the box would be a poor showing. So thankfully this wasn’t the case, within 25 minutes of putting them on I was teeing off and I didn’t have a single problem the whole round. Indeed that was the case any time I played rounds in these thanks to the soft fitbed and supportive heel there was no rubbing at all, it felt as though it molded to my foot in an instant.

Performance

When I laced them up for the first time I asked myself is there any way these shoes could get any comfier? The answer was yes! It was about 3 rounds until I could start to see the soul molding to my foot and this meant there was no movement at all when walking or taking my shot.

The standout feature for me was the support throughout the shoe, the heel in particular is a wonder of engineering. The molded 3D Heel counter locks in the heel underload very well and partnered with the FTF+ dual Durometer midsole it makes for a solid base for your golf swing. Holding everything together is an A-Frame TPU structure which along with the prominent spike points is the absolute definition of stability.

What at first I thought was an eyesore turned out to be one of the key features of this shoe’s success. Not only do the TPU molds look stable they really do hunker into the ground when underload and you can really feel them going to work when on the course or at the range, there will certainly be no more left foot slips for me when wearing these. The shoes have nine soft spikes and thanks to the placement of them my weight was distributed evenly across the entire shoe.

Final Verdict

At the price point of £170/$200, the Tour Alpha sits amongst the premium end of the market and it has to have the performance to back that up which it certainly does. With FootJoy’s vast lineup of golf shoes, these can easily get lost in the crowd but for a golfer who wants a high-quality shoe for year-round golf that will perform time after time, this may just be your next golf shoe. I loved these shoes and I’d be confident to say that these are one of the best all-rounded golf shoes that I’ve tried.

Also consider

If you’re a fan of FootJoy but the Tour Alpha doesn’t quite match what you’re after then FootJoy have an abundance of golf shoes to suit every golfer. The FootJoy Traditions is a superb golf shoe that offers tonnes of features you want including the one-year waterproof warranty. If it is a similar tour-proven alternative you’re after then the FootJoy Hyperflex is a good choice and is worn by LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau.
