Knowing which golf balls are going to be best for you and your game can be difficult. In order to make the decision-making process easier for you, last year we conducted an extensive golf ball robot test. This is one of the many ways in which we test golf balls, but to get a true feel for every golf ball we hit them on course with all 14 clubs in the bag.

With there being such an extensive range of golf balls on the market we have left female-specific golf balls out of this guide because the majority of female golfers can play with the same golf balls as men. While some of the best ladies’ golf balls are female-specific golf balls, many of them are unisex. Most female golfers will benefit from playing with premium golf balls, or depending on ability the best golf balls for mid-handicappers or best golf golf balls for beginners and high-handicappers.

One thing you can guarantee from buying your golf balls on Amazon is that they’ll be good value. Amazon stocks all kinds of golf balls from those that are expensive to the best cheap golf balls. No matter which end of the spectrum you’re looking at when purchasing golf balls, Amazon always provides brilliant value for golf balls you could buy elsewhere – it’s even better value when you factor in the quick and free delivery.

To help you find the best golf balls for your game we’ve compiled an extensive buying guide you can read through once you’ve finished looking through the best golf balls on Amazon.

The Titleist Pro V1 is the No.1 ball in golf, thanks to its popularity among Tour players and amateur golfers. The Pro V1 didn't blow us away in our 2023 robot test, but it performed very well in all categories and at varying swing speeds. Highlighting how strong of an option this ball is for a wide range of golfers.

There certainly are cheaper golf balls out there, but based on how highly regarded the Pro V1 is, the vast majority of golfers feel that the high price is justified. From the Pro V1, you can expect a solid yet soft feel, consistent and mid ball flight, and optimal spin off the tee and around the greens.

Golfers who prefer firmer-feeling golf balls that fly higher might want to look at Pro V1x golf balls. Whereas golfers who demand a lower ball flight and lower spin will benefit from gaming Titleist AVX golf balls.

Pros

  • Tighter dispersion than the previous model
  • Brilliant distance
  • Exceptional spin on approach shots
  • Fantastic feel off the club face
  • Played by a whole host of the world's best golfers

Cons

  • Urethane cover marks quite easily, considering the price

Callaway's rival to the Pro V1

Best soft-feeling premium golf balls on Amazon
Price: £55.00
Callaway have rebranded their premium golf balls in 2024. Rather than continuing with Chrome Soft X and Chrome Soft X LS golf balls, Callaway have decided to go with Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X golf balls. Both models are incredibly popular on Tour and in the amateur game. Xander Schauffele wasted no time before switching over to Chrome Tour golf balls.

The characteristics of the Chrome Tour are that they travel very consistently, delivering low spin off the tee and high spin around the greens. The feel of the Chrome Tour isn't super soft, but at the same time it definitely isn't firm - it's the kind of feel Goldilocks would love.

The Chrome Tour is available in four different patterns in both yellow and white; plain, Triple Track, 360° Triple Track, and TruTrack.

Pros

  • Impressive ball speed
  • Played by some of the best golfers in the game
  • Very consistent golf balls

Cons

  • Price has jumped up from the previous model, but it seems to be warranted

The Z-Star Diamond is the chosen golf ball for five-time Major Champion Brooks Koepka. While you might not play the game as well as Brooks Koepka, the Z-Star Dimaond could definitely help you lower your scores.

In our 2023 robot test, we found the Z-Star Dimaond to be Srixon's best option for golfers wanting an all-round premium performer. Compared to the Z-Star and Z-Star XV, the Z-Star Diamond was the strongest premium golf ball in Srixon's range for most golfers.

Read our full Srixon Z-Star Diamond golf balls review.

Pros

  • Amazing distance off the tee
  • Fantastic spin and control with irons
  • High greenside spin
  • Good durability

Cons

  • Could be too high-spinning off the tee for some golfers

Based on the name of this golf ball featuring the word 'soft' it perhaps isn't expected that the ERC Soft would be as strong with regard to distance as it is. However, in our 2023 robot test, the Callaway ERC Soft was the longest with a 100mph driver swing speed and it was delivering competitive distance with an 85mph and 115mph driver swing speed.

Distance was strong with a 7-iron too and this transfers to the course. I found this ball to be very strong off the tee and I was having to club down when firing at pins - partly because of the lower spin compared to what I'm used to. We also saw in our robot test that the ERC Soft isn't the strongest spinning golf ball.

However, once you apply more loft and get closer to the green, the spin does return and the ball is receptive when it hits the green. If you can afford to sacrifice spin from iron shots the the ERC Soft is definitely a ball to consider.

Pros

  • Impressive distance off the tee for varying swing speeds
  • Very good greenside spin and control
  • Incredibly soft golf balls

Cons

  • Spin does drop off with mid-irons

Srixon's option for golfers who value quality but don't swing like Brooks

Srixon have a strong range of premium golf balls, but the Srixon Q-Star Tour is one of the best Srixon golf balls for a reason. That reason being Srixon are aware that not every golfer is capable of swinging as quickly as Brooks Koepka or Shane Lowry. So they have built the Q-Star Tour to cater to golfers who have an average swing speed but look for properties found in premium golf balls.

The Q-Star Tour was a solid performer in our robot test from tee to green, and at its price (when factoring in its durability) it's one of the best value golf balls on the market. The only area the Q-Star Tour does dip in performance is wedge spin but it was a similar spin rate to balls of a similar ilk.

Read our full Srixon Q-Star Tour golf balls review.

Pros

  • Impressive short-game spin
  • Good distance and feel from every club in the bag
  • High durability

Cons

  • Wedge spin was slightly low on our golf ball robot test

The TaylorMade Tour Response is a golf ball held in high regard by many of us at TG, and I can honestly say that it disappointed us in our 2023 robot test. However, the way this ball performs on the golf definitely makes up for its sub-par performance in the robot test.

This golf ball is a serious competitor to the best premium golf balls. While many TaylorMade staffers reach for TP5 and TP5x golf balls, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see some pros teeing it up with a Tour Response.

My favorite Tour Response is the Stripe model because not only is it much easier to see, it helps with alignment on the green and off the tee.

Read our full TaylorMade Tour Response golf balls review.

Pros

  • Amazing visual and alignment aid (Stripe golf balls)
  • Incredibly soft feel
  • Impressive spin and control around the greens
  • Outstanding distance

Cons

  • Potentially not ideal for players who generate spin easily

Best golf balls for beginners and high-handicappers on Amazon

The "world's softest golf balls" according to Wilson

Best low-compression golf balls on Amazon
Price: £24.00
Many golfers look for a soft-feeling golf ball, and the Wilson Duo Soft is definitely a soft-feeling golf ball. Wilson actually claims this to be the "world's softest golf ball". While we couldn't prove this in our 2023 robot test, we could prove that this is a brilliant option for beginner and high-handicap golfers.

We found this golf ball to be long off the tee for golfers who swing with an 85mph swing speed, and we also found the Duo Soft to be really accurate - a trait of Wilson golf balls. The Duo Soft might not be as strong around the greens as the Triad, Staff Model, or Staff Model X, but for a two-piece golf ball, it does impress with spin.

Read our full Wilson Duo Soft golf balls review.

Pros

  • Incredibly soft feel
  • Good distance off the tee
  • Impressive spin rates

Cons

  • Really soft feel, which may not suit all golfers

Three-piece golf balls are often reserved for more skilled golfers. However, TaylorMade brought a three-piece golf ball to market specifically for beginners and high-handicappers to enjoy, and it's very much appreciated. Unfortunately, the Soft Response has been discounted and replaced with the SpeedSoft, but while the Soft Response is still in stock it's an absolute steal.

Pros

  • Incredibly soft feel
  • Amazing feedback from every club
  • Great ball for the price

Cons

  • It has been discontinued - buy before they disappear

It may come as a surprise to hear that Callaway's Supersoft golf balls offer incredible distance because for many golfers they attribute soft with spin which comes at the cost of losing distance. However, that's not the case with Supersoft. At a driver swing speed of 85mph, this golf ball was the longest in our golf ball robot test, but it did drop off quite significantly at 100mph and 115mph.

The Supersoft doesn't only offer distance, spin is fairly easy to generate because of its low-compression core. The Supersoft is a brilliant option for beginner and high-handicap golfers because it's easy to launch which materializes into good distance. Also at the price they are brilliant value and they possess that soft feel so many yearn for.

Pros

  • Incredibly soft golf ball that offers great feel
  • Really good distance for golfers with a slower swing speed
  • Fantastic value

Cons

  • Distance drop off for golfers with quicker swing speeds

Best value golf balls on Amazon

A quirky golf ball that offers great value

Best value premium golf balls

The TaylorMade TP5x Pix golf balls gained notoriety by being used and promoted by Rickie Fowler and Tommy Fleetwood. The Pix variations of the TP5 and TP5x feature the same incredible technology, the only change is that they have a pattern that helps with visibility and alignment.

TaylorMade's TP5x golf balls are one of the best premium golf balls on the market, used by Rory McIlroy and Charley Hull. These may be the previous model TP5x Pix golf balls, but they perform very similarly to the new model and they're much better value.

Pros

  • Firm feel is extremely responsive
  • Delivers an amazing high ball flight
  • Excellent visual and alignment enhancement

Cons

  • Not as durable as the new model

Wilson's golf ball aimed at golfers wanting to break 80

The Wilson Triad seriously impressed us in our 2023 robot test, delivering the most accuracy of all the golf balls we tested. Having a golf ball that's more likely to find the fairway and green is invaluable to so many golfers.

Based on the accuracy of the Triad, it's clear to see why Wilson claims this ball will help golfers break the illustrious 80 barrier. By helping you to find three more fairways, hit five more greens, and hole three more putts the Triad should be a golf ball many golfers consider.

Pros

  • Extremely accurate

The Srixon AD333 is very popular among beginners and high-handicap golfers - it's clear to see why. In our 2023 robot test, the AD333 performed closely to three-piece golf balls that demand a much higher price.

There are copious amounts of golf balls under £25 and the AD333 is the one we deem to be the best. From tee to green you can expect reliable performance and consistency that can sometimes be hard to find from two-piece ionomer golf balls. The AD333 delivers impressive distance and decent spin. There isn't much more you could ask for from the AD333.

Read our full Srixon AD333 golf balls review.

Pros

  • Kept up with three-piece golf balls in our 2023 robot test
  • Impressive long-game distance
  • Highly durable - only adding to the good value

Cons

  • Slightly clicky off the clubface

Best distance golf balls on Amazon

A solid distance golf ball that does much more than it says on the tin

Best overachieving distance golf balls on Amazon

With 15 golf balls in a pack, excellent distance, impressive spin for a distance golf ball, and good durability, the Pinnacle Rush is one of the best value golf balls on the market. While you shouldn't expect to see any Tour players teeing up a Pinnacle Rush, these golf balls should definitely be considered among amateur golfers.

In our 2023 robot test, the Pinnacle Rush emerged as the cheapest golf ball per yard thanks to its long distance. However, this isn't your typical distance golf ball that doesn't spin. The Pinnacle Rush was the highest-spinning two-piece golf ball with a wedge, and with an iron, it was competing with some of the best three-piece golf balls.

Pros

  • Delivers better spin rates than expected
  • Brilliant performer for varying swing speeds
  • Very reasonably priced

Cons

  • Feel isn't the best

If distance is your priority when purchasing golf balls Titleist Velocity has to be one of consideration. In a Titleist golf ball fitting I attended, I discovered that the two-piece Velocity produced the same distance as the four-piece Pro V1x - so why would you play with Pro V1x?

The issue with Velocity - as is the issue with all distance golf balls - is that they don't generate as much spin, but if this isn't a concern of yours then distance golf balls are well worth buying because they deliver great distance and they're much cheaper.

Titleist Velocity golf balls feel great considering they have an ionomer cover. These balls are very well-priced and despite producing low-spin I'm a massive fan of Velocity golf balls.

Pros

  • Great feel for a distance golf ball

The Srixon Distance is the best-selling golf ball on Amazon. If you are just starting out at golf it is an amazing ball to try because it will give you long distance with a soft feel, something highly desirable, and all for a very reasonable price.

Srixon are very well known in golf for manufacturing excellent golf balls for a range of golfers and their Distance balls are certainly one of the best available to beginners and high-handicap golfers. Obviously, these golf balls won't suit every new starter, so if you still want to play with Srixon golf balls that behave better on the greens try the AD333.

Best Golf Balls on Amazon: Buying Guide

Amazon is littered with many of the best golf balls and it can be overwhelming trawling through the extensive number of options if you’re not 100% sure what you’re looking for. Even after looking at the best golf balls on Amazon, it’s completely understandable if you have some questions you want answering, to determine the best golf ball for you. Hopefully, our buying guide can answer any questions you might have.

Ability

There are golf balls on the market for players of all abilities. However, most golfers would benefit from playing with one of the best premium golf balls, and Amazon has a wide range of premium golf balls on offer.

Although, if you would prefer not to play with premium golf balls in order to save some cash or play with a golf ball more suited to your ability then Amazon has just as many models for you to choose from. One point I would make is that if you’re looking for a piece of equipment to save money on, there are better options than golf balls. If you can play with premium golf balls I think you should.

Budget

On Amazon, it’s very easy to find golf balls within your budget because you can filter the products so that you’re only shown golf balls under a certain price – or above a particular price. Amazon have a wide range of golf balls at varying price points so you’ll easily be able to find golf balls within your budget, whether it’s £20 or £50.

Spin

Spin is your friend. You want to find a golf ball that will help you to generate as much spin as possible. Golf balls naturally spin more with higher-lofted golf clubs than with lower-lofted golf clubs. Most golf balls claim to produce low-mid spin in the long game, but in the short game, it can vary from low-very high.

Premium golf balls tend to be the best golf balls for producing spin because they consist of the most layers and sport urethane covers. It’s the construction of layers inside the golf ball that react with one another to generate optimal spin.

Whereas, with cheap golf balls and distance golf balls that consist of two layers and feature an ionomer or Surlyn cover they don’t spin as much in the short game because there aren’t as many layers creating friction and the cover isn’t as responsive with the clubface as urethane is.

Distance

Distance is the last factor you should consider when purchasing golf balls. Unless you specifically want distance golf balls then you should most definitely prioritise spin and accuracy. If you are capable of finding a golf ball that spins well, delivers impressive accuracy, and generates good distance then it’s a major bonus – this is a trait of premium golf balls.

Feel

Most golfers are fond of a softer-feeling golf ball because it creates a more pleasant sensation off the clubface. However, it could be worth trying firmer-feeling golf balls because, in my opinion, they are more responsive and provide more solid feedback on well-struck golf shots (and miss-hits).

Firm-feeling golf balls are nowhere near as firm as golf balls were in years gone by. Golf balls that feel like rocks are most definitely a thing of the past!

Colour

If you stood on the first tee at your local golf course on a busy Saturday you’d probably find 90% or more of golfers playing with a white golf ball – but could some of those golfers benefit from playing with a more vibrant colour?

Most of the golf balls sold on Amazon have different colour options available to view when you click on the product. It’s worth looking at the colour options because you might come across a colour that’s easier for you to see both at address and in the air. Helping you strike the ball better and find it easier, saving you money in the long term.

Alignment

Blank golf balls for some golfers just aren’t enough help on the greens and off the tee. Most brands now offer golf balls with enhanced alignment options, and the patterns vary in size, design, and prominence.

I would recommend giving a golf ball with an enhanced alignment aid a go, you never know it might improve your game!

Best Golf Balls on Amazon: FAQs

How do I know what golf ball is best?

There are certain non-negotiable parameters when it comes to golf balls, but for most golfers, it is a very personal choice. If you ask a sample of golfers what golf ball is best for them, it’s incredibly likely you’ll get a wide range of answers. While it’s expected that the Titleist Pro V1 will come back as the top recommendation (because it’s the No.1 ball in golf), it doesn’t mean it’s the best golf ball for you.

There are countless golf ball options out there, and if you’re not 100% sure which model will work best for you, it’s best to look within a specific category that best suits what you want from a golf ball, or that fits best with your ability. However, you can never go wrong playing with one of the best premium golf balls.

What golf ball does Tiger Woods use?

Tiger Woods is known for playing with Bridgestone Tour B X golf balls. Tiger helped with the production of the Bridgestone Tour B XS golf balls (there’s even a special edition Tour B XS which has ‘Tiger’ stamped on the ball), but Tiger has switched to another of the best Bridgestone golf balls because it’s slightly firmer and has helped improve his game.

What kind of golf ball should an average golfer use?

There isn’t a specific golf ball for average golfers to use. Obviously, depending on your ability the best golf balls for beginners and high-handicappers or the best golf balls for mid-handicappers might suit you to a tee. However, if you opt for one of the best premium golf balls they will undoubtedly improve your performance on the golf course, providing you’re currently not playing a golf ball from this category.

The most important golf ball for average golfers to use is a clean golf ball that isn’t scuffed. Scuffs and dirt on a golf ball massively hinder the performance of the golf ball, and this will negatively impact your game and your scoring.

How do you reuse old golf balls?

If you do find yourself with scuffed golf balls in your golf bag, the best use for these is retiring them to a practice bag. This way when you’re practicing you won’t be damaging new golf balls, and you can save them for the weekend when you’re chasing your lowest-ever round.

What golf ball does Rory McIlroy use?

Being a TaylorMade staff player, Rory McIlroy elects to play with one of the best TaylorMade golf balls. The golf ball of choice for Rory is the TaylorMade TP5x which is TaylorMade’s golf ball intended for golfers with the quickest swing speeds.

How we test golf balls

Every golf ball we either receive from the brands or have to purchase ourselves is put through its paces in order for us to discover just how well (or poorly) it performs. Our quest to deliver as much information about every ball as we can has led us to conduct our second golf balls robot test, following the success of our first in 2019.

When testing golf balls we’re looking at feel, performance, durability, sound, distance, and spin – along with anything specific to individual balls. Ensuring every piece of equipment is tested thoroughly is vital, and so we test golf balls over a period of time both on and off the course. For more information about how we test golf equipment click here.
