PGA Tour Rocket Mortgage Classic preview: field, betting odds, tee times, how to watch
Published: Last updated:
The PGA Tour heads to Michigan this week as the Detroit Golf Club plays host to the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
The 2024 edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic marks the sixth staging of the tournament, yet it is in an unfortunate spot on the schedule. The Memorial, US Open, and the Travelers have taken place in successive weeks. Not many players are going to skip either the signature events (otherwise they will face a fine) or a major championship, thus meaning the field in Detroit will be of the weaker variety.
The event began in 2019, replacing the Quicken Loans National on tour, which had been hosted by Tiger Woods since its inception in 2007.
Last year, Rickie Fowler ended his four-and-a-half-year drought on the PGA Tour by claiming victory in the event. He finished tied at 24-under par for the week with Adam Hadwin and Collin Morikawa, but he prevailed in the subsequent playoff, finally coming back into the winners’ circle.
The American is confirmed in the field as he aims to replicate last year’s stunning display. Another player to watch out for is 15-year-old Miles Russell, who will make his PGA Tour debut in Detroit this week.
Russell is one of the most decorated players in junior golf and will become one of the youngest ever players to feature in a PGA Tour event.
Where is the Rocket Mortgage Classic played?
Detroit Golf Club plays host to the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the first PGA Tour event to be held entirely within the Detroit City limits.
There are two courses at the Detroit Golf Club, the North and South, both of which were designed by acclaimed architect Donald Ross. Both were opened by 1916, with the event primarily being held on the North course, although one hole is played on the South layout.
While Ross has designed some of America’s most difficult courses (Pinehurst No.2 and Seminole spring to mind), the 18-hole North layout isn’t one of them. Since the tournament was added to the schedule in 2019, every single winner has won with double digits under par.
Tony Finau holds the record winning score of 26-under par from 2022, and it is clear this week could also see another birdie fest.
Indeed, the 2020 edition saw a scoring average of 70.06, which was the lowest out of all the par-72s throughout the season.
What is the format of the Rocket Mortgage Classic?
The format of the Travelers Championship is a standard strokeplay event played over 72 holes with a cut after 36 holes (two rounds). The player with the lowest score over four rounds will win the tournament.
Who is in the field at the Rocket Mortgage Classic?
The event comes two weeks after the US Open and a week after the final signature event of 2024, the Travelers Championship. This may suggest several of the big hitters will take a week off, thus making the field slightly weaker.
The highest-ranked player in the field is Cameron Young, ranked No.31 in the Official World Golf Rankings, but 12 of the top 50 will be making an appearance.
This includes four of the previous eight winners on the PGA Tour in 2024; Chris Gotterup, Robert MacIntyre, Taylor Pendrith, and Davis Riley.
Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Webb Simpson, Gary Woodland, and Francesco Molinari add some Major winning prestige to the event, which can count itself unlucky to feature after two signature tournaments and a Major Championship.

The winner of the event will take home a cheque for $1.6m plus 500 FedExCup points, which could be vital as the playoffs edge ever closer.
